What is DTF (Direct to Film) printing?
DTF stands for Direct to Film. Your design is printed onto a clear PET film with water-based CMYK and white inks, coated with hot-melt adhesive powder, then heat-pressed onto fabric or other surfaces. Unlike screen printing, DTF needs no screens, no weeding, and no minimum order quantity, which makes it one of the most versatile and cost-effective ways to decorate apparel.
How does DTF printing work?
There are four steps. (1) Your design is printed in full color onto clear PET film. (2) White ink is printed behind the colors so the design looks vibrant on any fabric color. (3) Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured. (4) The finished transfer is heat-pressed onto your garment at 288°F (142°C) for 12 to 15 seconds. The result is a soft, flexible, full-color print with no color limits.
What are DTF transfers?
DTF transfers are ready-to-press printed films. You receive a sheet with your design already printed. Place it on a garment, press it with a heat press, and peel. You don't need any printing equipment. We handle the printing so you can focus on pressing and selling.
What does "gang sheet" mean?
A gang sheet is one transfer sheet with several designs arranged together to use the space well and lower the cost per design. You upload your designs with our Gang Sheet Builder and pay for the sheet size, not per design, so fitting more designs on a sheet means a lower cost per transfer.
DTF vs. other printing methods
How does DTF compare to screen printing?
Screen printing needs a separate screen for each color, which means setup costs and minimum orders, often 24 to 50 or more pieces. DTF has no setup cost, no color limits, and no minimums, and it works for single pieces or bulk orders. Screen printing can cost less at very high volumes (500 or more), but DTF wins on flexibility, detail, and small-run cost. DTF also prints photos and gradients that screen printing can't easily reproduce.
What's the difference between DTF and DTG (Direct to Garment)?
DTG prints ink directly onto a garment with a specialized printer. DTF prints onto a film that is then transferred. DTF works on any fabric color without pretreatment, while DTG needs pretreatment on dark fabrics. DTF transfers can be stored and pressed later, and DTF gives more vibrant whites and better wash durability. DTG can feel slightly softer, but it is limited to cotton-heavy fabrics.
DTF vs. sublimation: which is better?
Sublimation works only on polyester or polymer-coated surfaces, and only on white or light colors. It leaves no feel on the fabric, while DTF leaves a thin, soft film. DTF works on most fabrics in any color. If you only print on white polyester, sublimation is a good fit and we offer sublimation transfer sheets. For cotton, dark colors, and blends, DTF is the better choice.
How does DTF compare to heat transfer vinyl (HTV)?
HTV has to be cut and weeded, which takes time for detailed or multi-color designs. DTF prints full color (unlimited colors, gradients, photos) with no cutting or weeding. HTV has a thicker, more plasticky feel, while DTF is softer and more flexible. For simple one-color text, HTV can work. For everything else, DTF is faster, cheaper, and gives better results.
Fabrics and materials
What fabrics work with DTF transfers?
DTF transfers work on most fabrics: 100% cotton, 100% polyester, cotton and polyester blends, tri-blends, nylon, rayon, denim, canvas, leather, and more. You don't need a different process for each material, which is one of DTF's biggest advantages over other methods.
Can DTF transfers go on dark-colored fabrics?
Yes. Every DTF transfer includes a white ink layer behind the colors, so your design stays vibrant and opaque on black, navy, red, or any dark fabric, with no color shifting. That is a major advantage over sublimation and some DTG methods.
Does DTF work on polyester without issues?
Yes. DTF transfers apply cleanly to polyester at the same standard temperature and time, 288°F (142°C) for 12 to 15 seconds. When applied correctly there is no dye migration or scorching. DTF works equally well on cotton and polyester.
Can DTF be applied to hard surfaces like wood, metal, or glass?
DTF is designed mainly for textiles. Some crafters have applied DTF transfers to smooth hard surfaces such as wood, ceramic mugs, and phone cases, but adhesion varies and isn't guaranteed. For hard surfaces, sublimation on polymer-coated items or our UV-DTF decals are better options.
Pressing and application
How do I press a DTF transfer?
Follow these steps for a good press every time:
- Pre-press your garment for 3 to 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Place the transfer face-down on the garment, with the design touching the fabric.
- Press at 288°F (142°C) for 12 to 15 seconds with firm, even pressure.
- Hot peel: remove the film while it is still warm, pulling at a steady angle, not straight up.
- Re-press for 10 to 15 seconds with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper on top. This smooths the finish and removes excess adhesive powder.
Are there exceptions to the hot-peel method?
Yes. Glitter and Glow in the Dark transfers need a cold peel. After pressing at 288°F (142°C) for 12 to 15 seconds, let the transfer cool completely to room temperature before peeling. Peeling these while hot can lift the glitter or glow particles.
Can I use a household iron instead of a heat press?
We strongly recommend a heat press for consistent results. A household iron doesn't give even pressure or precise temperature control, and both matter for adhesion. If you must use an iron, set it to the highest cotton setting with no steam, put a flat hard surface underneath, and press firmly for 30 to 40 seconds in each area. Results will vary. If you press regularly, a good heat press is worth the money, and they start around $200 to $300.
What heat press settings should I use?
Temperature: 288°F (142°C). Time: 12 to 15 seconds. Pressure: medium-firm (40 to 60 PSI). Peel: hot peel for standard transfers, cold peel for glitter and glow in the dark. Re-press: 10 to 15 seconds with a Teflon sheet. These settings work for standard DTF transfers on all fabric types.
My transfer didn't stick. What went wrong?
The most common causes are: (1) Not enough pressure. This is the number one issue, and the press should take some effort to close. (2) Temperature too low. Check with an infrared thermometer that your platen actually reaches 288°F (142°C). (3) Moisture in the garment. Always pre-press to remove it. (4) Waterproof or treated fabric, since some athletic fabrics have coatings that resist adhesion. If problems continue, contact us with photos and we'll help troubleshoot.
Durability and care
How many washes will a DTF transfer last?
When pressed correctly and cared for properly, DTF transfers last 50 to 100 or more washes without significant cracking, peeling, or fading. Durability depends on three things: a proper press (full adhesion), proper washing, and garment quality.
Will DTF transfers crack or peel over time?
Quality DTF transfers are soft, flexible, and made not to crack under normal use. Unlike cheap iron-on transfers or low-quality HTV, DTF stays flexible through repeated washes. Cracking is usually caused by too little heat or pressure when pressing, or by harsh washing such as hot water, bleach, or high-heat drying.
What are the washing and care instructions?
- Wait 24 hours after pressing before the first wash.
- Wash inside-out in cold water.
- Tumble dry on medium heat or hang dry.
- Don't bleach or use fabric softener directly on the print.
- Don't iron directly over the transfer. Use a Teflon sheet or press cloth if needed.
- Don't dry clean.
How do DTF transfers feel on the garment?
DTF transfers have a soft, thin feel, not thick or rubbery like cheap iron-ons or plastisol screen prints. You can feel a slight texture over the printed area, but it is flexible and moves with the fabric. After a few washes it softens further and blends into the garment.
Artwork and file requirements
What file formats do you accept?
PNG is recommended, with a transparent background at 300 DPI or higher. We also accept vector files (AI, PDF, EPS). We do not accept JPG or JPEG files, because JPG compression adds artifacts and doesn't support transparency, so backgrounds print with your design.
What resolution should my image be?
300 DPI minimum at the size you want printed. For a 12 x 12 inch print, your image should be at least 3600 x 3600 pixels. Higher is always better, since you can't add detail that isn't there. Images below 200 DPI look pixelated or blurry when printed.
Does my image need a transparent background?
Yes. DTF prints everything in the image file, including backgrounds. If your PNG has a white background, that white box prints and transfers onto the garment. Export with a transparent background (the checkerboard pattern in Photoshop or Canva). We are not responsible for backgrounds that print with your image.
Do you create or edit artwork?
We are a print-only service. We don't create, edit, or modify artwork, and what you upload is what we print. If you need a single solid color removed from your image, such as a white or black background, we can sometimes do that, but the color is removed from the entire image. For design help, we recommend hiring a freelance designer on Fiverr or Upwork before you order.
Do I need to mirror my artwork?
No. Do not mirror your artwork. We handle all file preparation. Upload your image exactly as you want it to appear on the garment. If you upload a mirrored file, it prints mirrored and transfers backwards.
What are common artwork mistakes to avoid?
- Low resolution: below 300 DPI prints pixelated.
- White or colored backgrounds: backgrounds print, so use a transparent PNG.
- Mirrored files: don't mirror, we handle that.
- Extra empty space: trim blank area around your design, because empty space takes up sheet area and costs you money.
- JPG format: JPGs add artifacts and don't support transparency.
- Neon colors: very bright neon colors on screen can print slightly different because printers use CMYK.
Ordering and pricing
How much do DTF transfers cost?
Pricing is by sheet size, and the exact price shows in the Gang Sheet Builder before you check out. Gang sheets run about $0.015 per square inch, from roughly $0.0125 to $0.0175 depending on sheet size. For example, a 22.5 x 30.5 inch Hybrid Peel gang sheet is $12.01, and you can fit dozens of designs on one sheet.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No minimums. Order one transfer or one thousand. There are no bulk commitments, signup fees, or contracts, which makes it easy to test new designs, run a small business, or place a one-off custom order.
What is a gang sheet and how does it save money?
A gang sheet lets you arrange multiple designs on one sheet. Because you pay by sheet size, not per design, fitting more designs on a sheet lowers your cost per transfer. For example, ten 3 x 3 inch designs fit on a 12 x 16 inch sheet, which is $2.69 as a Hot Peel custom size, or about $0.27 per design.
Are there bulk discounts or wholesale pricing?
Our pricing is already set at wholesale level. We don't have a separate bulk tier, and for very large recurring orders you can contact us to talk about custom arrangements.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and Diners Club cards, plus PayPal, Shop Pay, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

Shipping and turnaround
How fast do orders ship?
Fast, and we mean monster fast. Orders placed before 4:00 PM ET are printed and shipped the same business day, and many are ready in as little as an hour. Orders placed after 4 PM ship the next business day. Domestic orders ship with UPS, and most arrive within 2 to 5 business days. We're based in Tampa, FL, so Southeast US customers often get their orders in 1 to 2 days. Orders over $35 ship free.
Do you offer rush or overnight shipping?
We don't have a formal rush option at checkout, but we do our best to accommodate urgent orders. Contact us or call before you place your order and we'll work with you. Same-day printing is already standard for orders placed before 4 PM. The fastest way to get your order sooner is to choose the fastest shipping option shown at checkout.
My order shows shipped but tracking isn't updating
Carrier scans can lag, especially right after pickup, and a damaged barcode or label can stop tracking from updating. If tracking shows no movement for more than 3 business days, contact us and we'll open a case with the carrier.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Besides the United States, we ship to 27 countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, and Japan. International orders ship by USPS or DHL Express. Enter your address at checkout to see whether we ship to you and what it costs.
Cancellations and returns
How do I cancel my order?
Email us or call as soon as possible. We accept cancellations within 24 hours of purchase. If your order hasn't been printed yet, we can cancel it and work with you on a resolution, usually store credit or a gift card for future purchases. If your order has already been printed and shipped, we can't cancel it or issue a refund, because DTF transfers are custom-made to your specifications.
What is your refund policy?
Because every order is custom printed, we don't offer standard refunds or returns. If there is a print quality issue on our end (color defect, smearing, wrong size), contact us with photos within 7 days of delivery and we will reprint your order or give you store credit. We are not responsible for problems caused by low-resolution artwork, incorrect files, or improper pressing.
What if my order arrives damaged?
Every package ships with $50 of insurance by default. If your order arrives damaged, take photos of the packaging and the transfers right away, open an insurance claim with the carrier (UPS for domestic orders), then contact us. We'll work with you and expedite a reprint.
My print has lines or looks pixelated. Is that a defect?
Visible lines or pixelation almost always mean the original image was below 300 DPI. We print exactly what you upload, so a low-resolution file prints low resolution. Before ordering, zoom in on your image at 100% on screen. If it looks blurry, it will print blurry. If you believe the problem is on our end, contact us with your order number and photos and we'll review it.
My image printed smaller than expected
This is usually caused by extra empty space in your image file. Transparent blank area between the edge of the file and the actual design takes up sheet area. The image is sized to the dimensions you ordered while keeping its aspect ratio, so it is never stretched or distorted. Trim empty space around your design before uploading to get the largest possible print.
Starting a DTF business
What equipment do I need to press DTF transfers?
You need a heat press with adjustable temperature, time, and pressure. A good 15 x 15 inch clamshell or swing-away press starts around $200 to $300. You do not need a DTF printer, a computer, or any other equipment, because we handle all the printing. Add a few blank garments and you're in business.
Can I resell DTF transfers or start a custom apparel brand?
Yes. Many of our customers run their own apparel brands, Etsy shops, event businesses, and local print shops using our transfers. We also offer white-label drop shipping: we print and ship directly to your customers with no DTF.Monster branding. Contact us to set it up.
How do I start a custom apparel business with DTF?
Here's the short version: (1) Get a heat press ($200 to $300). (2) Source blank garments from suppliers like S&S Activewear, SanMar, or Bella+Canvas. (3) Create or commission your designs. (4) Order DTF transfers from us, with no minimums. (5) Press the transfers onto your blanks. (6) Sell online (Etsy, Shopify, Instagram) or at local events. Is DTF good for on-demand or print-on-demand businesses?
Yes. With no minimums, no screens, and no setup costs, you can print one shirt at a time and still make money. Order transfers as you get sales, then press and ship. Many customers run print-on-demand businesses this way, with low risk, low inventory, and high margins.
What's the shelf life of DTF transfers?
DTF transfers can be stored for 6 to 12 months or more when kept flat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. That means you can order in advance, build inventory, and press as needed. Store them flat, not rolled or folded, with parchment paper between sheets to keep them from sticking.
